I read newspaper quite a lot and came across some expressions and sentences that I couldn't get a clue on what they meant. I would be very obliged if someone could explain them to me.![]()
"There is little prospect of Vietnam reversing the course of opening its economy." => reverse the course ???
"face extreme difficulties finding managers who can confidently interface between overseas clients and teams of young software engineers" => what does "interface" mean in this context ?
"when the whole investment opportunity here was smoke and mirrors" => what does "smoke and mirrors" mean ?
"All nightspots must be closed after midnight. After-hours places do exist for those in the know, however." => those in the know ???
"The biggest vessels can carry 9000 containers, offering economics of scale that seem to bend logic" => what does "economics of scale", "bend logic" mean?
Thanks in advance.
1 They will find it difficult to reverse the policy of opening the economy
2 communicate with both sides well
3 An illusion, not a real opportunity
4 These bars are not opern to the public, the people in the know are those that know where they are and how to get in
5 An economy of scale is where the cost of producing something falls because fixed costs don't increase thoughy production does- the more you make, the cheaper it gets
Thank you, teacher.
But I quite don't understand the last sentence. The more I produce, the cheaper it gets. So in this sentence's context, it means the more a vessel can carry containers, the cheaper the cost is ?
BTW, you still didn't explain what "bend logic" means ?![]()
