I don't understand the difference between "your daughter" and "the daughter of yours". Can somebody pls help me with that?
A friend of mine from the States once told me he felt angry when someone used "the daughter of yours" to refer to his daughter.
Why ?
when i say (my daughter), i only mean my daughter. but when i say ( the daughter of mine) , i want to show my authority to other people and say that Annie, foe example, is only MY daughter and nobody else can decide about her.
"Your daughter" of course is just a normal expression. When people say "that/the daughter of yours" it often means they are going to say something critical of your daughter. That daughter of yours is so rude!
So to be a little angry (or maybe worried) is an understandable reaction.
As Davy said, the phrase "that daughter of yours" is usually only used when something critical is being said. Even among parents, when one of their children misbehaves, the father knows something is wrong when he comes home from work and his wife greets him with "Do you know what that son of yours did today??"![]()
