Could you paraphrase or explain or say in other words the following sentence. Particularly the part in inverted commas:

Tha fact that sir Thomas More was a martyr and a Great Mind did not "cut any ice" at all with him, Alan Grant.

"Doesn't cut [any] ice" is a polite way of saying the very vulgar American idiom "doesn't cut [any] sh*t."

It means to have no force or importance at all.

The fact that More was a martyr did not mean anything to Grant.

"You may be a big shot at your school, but that doesn't cut sh*t around here."

Well, 'that doesn't cut any ice with me' is the original idiom though - referring to someone so useless or unimportant (to the person saying it) that they were unable to perform the basic task of cutting through ice on a lake to catch fish in cold weather.
