Sentence correction

I wanted to ask if there was any mistake in the following sentence:
"As our country progresses through the twenty-first century, the elderly population continues to grow at a rather moderate rate."

Grammatically, it sounds OK to me. Logically, the country does not progress; it is the century. Usually we write: 21st, I think. I would change to:

As the 21st century progresses, our country's elderly population continues to grow at a rather moderate rate.
