mutton and beef?
Mutton is the meat of a sheep, while beef is the meat of a cow (or bull). English is unusual in having many pairs of words for a live animal and its dead meat. For example, sheep/mutton, cow/beef, pig/pork. This is because the French Normans who conquered England in 1066 obviously spoke French, and their words for the meat of the cooked animals became incorporated into English: 'mouton', 'boeuf' and 'porc' are the French words for 'sheep', 'cow' and 'pig'.
A history you have memorised?Intresting!![]()
The only historical date that every English schoolchild knows by heart is 1066, the defeat of the English by the French at the Battle of Hastings.
As a side-note, the disparaging word used by the French for the English has been for many centuries 'les ros-bifs' (the 'roast beefs') after the traditional English meal; just as the English call the French 'frogs' or 'crapauds' (the French word for 'toads') because of the French liking for eating frogs' legs.
