Default request to send phrases of greetings

dear sir/mam i don't know to respond to some situations of empathy...
like if some one says " I lost my father " - idon't know how to respond and express sympathy/ empathy... i will be grateful if u can send me these phrases of empahty so that i can make my speech more converational and touchy.

Usually that's how the native English speakers say.

native speaker usually say " i am sorry to hear that'
