Default me and my

I saw movie 'Educating Rita' the other day. The lead character Rita is a working class girl. She says 'me' whenever she means 'my'.
Is that a class thing or a regional thing? The movie was set in UK but I don't know where.

That's strictly used in BE, ex: "I'd like some sugar in me tea, please."; one of our UK members will be able to tell you if that's a regional dialect, etc.

It is very common in many parts of the UK, so common that it almost a national usage. Some, of course, consider it bad English. I tend to use it all the time.
