Default please help urgent thanks in advance

"Turkey, for so long valued by the West as a secular, Muslim ally, as a member of Nato, as a pioneering Muslim ally of Israel — generally, as a bridge between Europe, the Middle East and Central Asia — is finding the ambivalence a strain"

What does this "is finding the ambivalence a strain" here.

Second request

what does that sentence mean

"The European Union, which has long assumed that Turks craved membership, has only slowly become alert to the danger that, at some price, they would not — as polls now show. "

Thanks

There is an ambivalence in the EU about Turkey's joining- some are in favour, but some ae opposed, which means that it is hard to say whether they are wanted by the EU, which makes it difficult for Turkey to know where they stand with the EU.

The bureaucracy of the EU has alway taken it for granted that Turkey would agree to any concessions in order to join, and has exploited this eagerness. They are becoming aware that the public mood in Turkey is not automatically in favour of joining the EU, and that if the bargain is too unfavourable to Turkey's people, they will reject EU membership.
