Exclamation Deep & Surface structure!!!

Hello everybody,
Would you please help me to get the concept of Deep & Surface structure of a sentence.I`m totally mixed up.

I can give you examples:
"That's a deep valley"
"The surface of the cylinder is..."

I used to compare 'a deep ocean' with 'a shallow pond'.

Thank you so much but maybe I didn`t make myself clear enough.What I meant was the Deep & Surface structure of a sentence. As you may know according to Noam Chomsky(a famouse linguist)each sentence has a deep and a surface structure.Let me post a new thread to discuss the matter.
