I was under the impression that the modern past tense forms represent a fusion of the Old English past subjunctive and past indicative forms.

Thus for example "ic stæl" [past indic.] and "ic stǣle" [past subj.] are both present in "I stole".

(I'm not sure if this is relevant, or even interesting.)
