Thumbs down always alternate a bite of rice with a bite of the side dishes

how can i say the same thing another way?(always alternate a bite of rice with a bite of the side dishes)

How about:
Alternate eating a bite or two of one of your side dishes between eating a bite or two of your rice.

Capitalization!
