Default word in a article

Hi, I don't understand a sentence in my article, it will be great to help me about this:
"..pay $500m in taxes or face expulsion, even though both companies thought they had med their obligations."
What does face expulsion mean in this contex? 10x

To be confronted with [face] forced removal [expulsion].
