I noticed that a lot of Americans would use this "adding additional (antennas, etc.)..." and I have always been wondering if its actually a "good English". Please, advise.

There's nothing wrong with it. 'Additional' implies that they are not part of the original configuration, so it's not a case of redunancy. You could try another word, like 'supplementary' if you like. ;-)
