Hi i am analysing a poem that is coming from a mother's perspective who talks about motherhood...there is a metaphor on the word "faces" that i have found but don't understand in this line:
"We have had many faces and we will have more"
Could you please explain the meaning of this?
Hi,
The'faces' may mean the different roles that women play.
In this line of poetry it means the mother till then has been a daughter, sister, friend, lover, wife. Now she is having another designation - that of a mother. and in future, the mothr may become a friend, a sister, a confidante etc to the child. again when time races ahead, she will become a mother-in-law, granny, great granny. the roles that we all play in life are many.
explaining this much would mar the beauty of the poem. in fact, faces is very much clear in the line you have supplied. don't think of the physical faces. it is not the anatomical part of the body, but the emotional make ups.
