Question Please can anybody expalin to me the Intention behind this sentence?

What I want to know is the intention of the person when he says that I have learn't from my past relation that "In china chinese is just a food" then what does he mean of that relation? I already know the meaning of this phrase but couldn't interpret it in the refernce of the context. Please help.
