Default can "follow" be used like this?

Can I use "follow" in this meaning?
`
He was just following me and didn't really agree. (meaning that I was asking someone for his opinion on something, and he simply said what I wanted to hear and didn't really agree)

I think that word is somewhat formal or not common. If I can't express that meaning with "follow", is there another word to express it, or do I have to reword the phrase?

I'd say we use it that way but to avoid any confusion with the directional meaning we wouldn't use 'me' but rather we'd use "my opinion" or "my feelings", as in,

He was just following my opinion and didn't really agree.
