Hello,
1.) if i were to write " on my mothers side of the family" where would the apostrophe be on mothers?

2.) could you please give me an explanation on when to use an apostrophe and how

On my mother's side...

This is because you only have one mother. Mothers' is the plural possessive form.

Use an apostrophe:
1 To show letters are missing- don't, isn't
2 To show possession- mother's (one mother), mothers' (more than one)
