Is the sentence correct? If not, why?

I'd say older would be used more often than elder.

My grandfather, an old-school prescriptivist, despised 'by the name of' as an Americanism. I believe he was right about the American influence, and I'd prefer to use 'named' myself. But 'by the name of' is widely used now both sides of the Atlantic.
