Stop vs Stop from

Hi I am an english teacher but English is not my native language so I still have problems sometimes. Last class I was explaining my student that you stop somebody FROM doing something. But she said "isn't it okay to say "stop smoking" instead of "stop from smoking"". I just couldn't answer, trying to figure out in my head in which case you use "stop + verb" and in which case "stop FROM + Verb"... I know when not to say "from" but I just feel it, I cannot explain it. I tried to search the web for an answer but haven't found anything... Any help would be greatly appreciated :)

If you want the traditional words, Kykex, the usages are intransitive and transitive.

ps I'm sure Tdol could have said this, and maybe chose not to say it. But my (tiny) experience of teaching EFL included some teachers of English who spoke it as a second language. And I found they were much more comfortable with the academic impedimenta of language analysis than other learners.
