Unhappy adv or noun

1. It was 1993.. What part of speech is 1993. My friend says, its a noun because of S-LV-C pattern, for her a complement can only be a noun or adj. But for me, it's an adverb. Which is correct? and why? thanks!buc

2. I asked this last week. What's the difference when you say," I worked at Starbucks" and "I worked for Starbucks".

Default Re: adv or noun

Your friend is right. In this sentence, 1993 is functioning as a noun. It is the name of a year, therefore it is a proper noun.

I worked at Starbucks could mean that you worked inside a Starbucks coffee shop. I could also mean that you stood in front of a Starbucks coffee shop begging for money.

I worked for Starbucks means that you were employed by Starbucks. It could mean that you sold coffee at the counter, swept the floor, or piloted their corporate jet.
