International Exchange or International Interchage?

Hello everybody!

We are a group of efl teachers and we have a question:

What is correct? Exchange or Interchange?

Is there any difference?

Can they be considered synonyms?

They aren't used the same way in most contexts. I have heard both used for when students go and stay with a family in another country, then return the favour, but elsewehere, they tend to be different.

According to your answer, both terms can be used as synonyms when we are talking about sending students to study abroad, right? In other contexts... what would the difference be?
