In the HBO series Six Feet Under, season 2 episode 3, "The Plan",
Robbie takes Ruth to a course "The Plan" that teaches people to be happier.
There's a circumstance that, Robbie asks Ruth to call her kids and tell them that she loves them.

Here's the dialogue:
Robbie: Why don't you try calling your kids?
Ruth: I don't even know where my kids are, and the last thing they want
is for me to call on a Friday night so I can put in new flooring.

What does Ruth mean? What does "put in new flooring" mean?
Explaining it literally seems incorrect.

Actually, Robbie wanted Ruth to call her kids so that they could start "rebuilding." Robbie meant rebuilding as in fixing their relationship, but Ruth took him literally, which is why she made that remark about installing new flooring.
