    Mincemeat and minced meat... it's very confusing... I've seen a TV English course today and there they explained it... I really didn't know that you call the candided fruits "mincemeat"!

    "awake to" is fine, if you're talking about a realization that has come to you over time: "After living with him for 18 months, I finally awoke to his selfishness". You may have been brooding about this text for a long time - in which case your usage is good.

    But in the case of noticing something in a text, I think I'd use "was aware of" or "notice" or "was conscious of".
