Default Grammar help!

Hi all,

After ungoing an English grammar test recently, i have some general questions regarding correct use of grammar. Would be great if someone can help and advise on the following:

1)

A In my class most students use e-mail

B In my class the most students use e-mail

In my opinion both of the sentences are correct, in the second THE is the definite article, MOST being the quantifier, Students the noun....

Although it perhaps "sounds" a little strange when spoken, and might not be perfect, can someone please advise if this is however correct use of grammar??

2)

I’d like to know what you do for a:Work b: A living c: A job d: A profession

As work is not a countable noun, I would imagine that all are correct, or perhaps someone can provide info as to why one of the options is incorrect?? In the recent test only one option was actually correct (but the test was written by non native speakers).

3)
  • If I would have been you I would have acted differently
  • If I had been you I would have acted differently.
Are both of these sentences correct?? The time is the past and the statement contrary to reality....

I would really apprecaite it if someone could shed some light on this.

1)
A In my class most students use e-mail
B In my class the most students use e-mail

Both are correct. The second one is perhaps more rare (usually you can find it as "most of the students") but it's certainly grammatical. COBUILD concordance sampler gives plenty of results.

2)
I’d like to know what you do for a:Work b: A living c: A job d: A profession
a:Work wrong
b:Living correct
c:job wrong
d: profession wrong

It's not a matter of Count or Mass (Uncount) noun, but rather of idiomatic usage.

3)
If I would have been you I would have acted differently
Wrong. Usually you don't use "would" like this, except in sentences such as "If you would please answer, I would be grateful".
Correct would be: "If I were you, I would have acted differently". It's also possible to say: "If I were you, I would act differently" (it indicates generic, habitual use)

If I had been you I would have acted differently.
Not used. You can find it in older texts, such as in Jane Austen, but a search in
COBUILD concordance sampler returned no results.
