Does someone know with which verbs do you set the gerund?

Some verbs take only a gerund as a complement; others take only an infinitive. Another group can take either and the choice can create a difference in meaning that varies from slight/nonexistent to profound.
There is little to no difference with the verb "like".
I like to go camping.
I like going camping.
The difference is profound with the verb "stop".
John stopped smoking. (gave up the habit)
John stopped to smoke. (interrupted an activity to have a cigarette).
