The word "imagological" doesn't exist, according to Oxford English Dictionary but I'm sure it's just the adj. of "imago", which is:

1. a. Entom. The final and perfect stage or form of an insect after it has undergone all its metamorphoses; the ‘perfect insect’.

b. transf. The perfect stage of other animals that undergo a metamorphosis.

2. Psychoanalysis. A subjective image of someone (esp. a parent) which a person has subconsciously formed and which continues to influence his attitudes and behaviour. So father-imago, mother-imago.

So, just choose your semantic field

Hello Toexu, welcome to UsingEnglish!

"Imagological" seems to mean "pertaining to the presentation of X in the media or in literature".

Thus "an imagological study of Muslim women in British newspapers" would look at the way in which Muslim women are presented in British newspapers (e.g. the stereotypical images, the ideological assumptions behind that presentation, etc).

It seems to be a specialist word, though; so another member may be better equipped to explain the nuances of its usage and meaning!

All the best,

MrP

(Sorry, Mariner, I didn't see that you'd already replied.)

I've considered this possibility but it doesn't make sense in the sentence: "Is the compilation informed by a recognizable literary model? Are there signs of assumed familiarity, of a sense of cultural superiority, of a primarily imagological interest?"

It seems that you were right after all, MrPedantic

EDIT:

Actually, I think we're both talking about the same thing.
