I have to rewrite this sentence using a present participle

it says..
1) He was studying at University when he decided that he wanted to become a politician.
Could you tell me if this sentence is correct:

*Studying at University when he decided that...
or
*he was studying at University when deciding that... (I don't think so...)

I am puzzled...

I'm a little confused because there is a present participle in your original sentence (part of the verb). Another way to state that would be:

Studying at the university, he decided to become a politician.
