Default Should cut down...vs. should drink less...

Are you trying to seem educated or something if you're saying "Guy should cut down on his caffeine intake." which is heard in a film rather than just saying "you should drink less coffee"? Or it's not and educated guess?

I can imagine this sentence in an informal context. I don't think it would usually come across as pretentious. I can also imagine it shortened to: "Guy should cut down on his caffeine."

Drinks such as Coke and Pepsi have plenty of caffeine, too.
