American English (or AmE) and British English (BrE) have differences in spelling, pronunciation and choice of words (and in many other areas; the further you go into idioms, the more the differences) Some examples of differences in spelling: AmE: harbor neighbor color traveling BrE: harbour neighbour colour travelling Examples of differences in word choice: AmE: cookie stroller BrE: biscuit pram

When I first started on Internet English forums, I was under the impression that the differences were few and minor. After many years, I have learned that the differences would fill a book. Most are minor, so we can still communicate relatively well.

This site has some of the very basic differences between the two versions of English. Luckily, despite the differences, a Yank can still usually make himself be understood in England: "I've put your suitcases in the boot, sir." "What? I'm not wearing boots?!" "The compartment in the back of the car." "Oh, you mean the trunk!"
