bird sounds

I know that hens 'cackle' but apparently that is the noise they make after they have laid eggs. Generally they make a lot of noise when they do that. But is there a word for the sound they make in 'normal circumstances'? They often do make a sound when they are walking around going about their business.

Is there a word other than 'chirping' for the sound chickens make?

"Chirping" sounds rather too melodious to me for the noise made by chicks; I'd say they go 'cheep'.

(There's an old joke here about 'chickens going cheap'; inventing a suitable setting for this punch-line is left as an exercise for the reader ;-) )
