| They have much the same meaning, though 'wear out' can also mean to use something until it no longer works properly- if you wear shoes until they get holes in them, you wear them out. |

| There's also another meaning of "exhaust" that has nothing to do with wearing out: it means to use up completely: "There was nothing else to do. They had exhausted all the other possibilities." b |
