I don't think there's any complicity, Humble (except perhaps in language learning - Tdol knows the difficulties in language learning, because he is one [but of Khmer rather than English]). English spelling and grammar's a mess, because it's an amalgam of several languages (with borrowings from many others).
And you certainly can say He had a drink in the Red Lion; what I said (perhaps unnecessarily) was that you don't repeat the article.
