1.What does "the long game of art" mean? Why is "long game" used to modify "art"? Does it imply that "art" is like "a sport" in a sense? 2.The book displays in full Sylvester's catholic interests. Why are "display" and "in" used together? I think "in" should be omitted here.
Long game = something takes place over a long period of time- in art, something may seem great today but could be forgotten in a few years.
The preposition goes with 'full'- in full = completely
Not that I know of, but, for example, Van Gogh died unknown and today is one of the most famous painters of all time, while many painters who were famous in their lifetimes are forgotten today- that's what I understand by the phrase.
