people were going to sheets? (correct use)
What do you think of this introduction I made to my essay? "At that distant year of 1964 we were living a bad time with people going to sheets to claim for something almost every day." Is the use of "sheets" correct?
Thanks in advance to all people who made comments.

I'm sorry but I don't understand that. Are you talking about people going to the streets, as in demonstrating or protesting?

Yes but it doesn´t make sense, does it?
To me sheets were like big groups of people. Thanks for your interest and for your help.
