Default given that vs much as

---- the road conditions were rather bad, we did not reach the town so late.

    a) whereas
    b) as
    c) now that
    d) much as
    e) given that

Which choice would you go for, D or E? Due to RATHER, I felt there would be something weird with MUCH AS, whereas GIVEN THAT doesn't look so inappropriate considerind its meaning of "considering" . :)

Thank you very much in advance.

But I couldn't see any clear cause and effect relationship in this sentence.

The cause is the relatively good driving conditions; the effect is that they didn't arrive too late.

    b

Actually, the driving conditions were bad. That is the problem I have with "as". One would expect someone to arrive late with bad driving conditions. That they didn't arrive "too late" sounds as if it were unexpected. I think I would choose "given that" to begin that sentence.

The problem with this question is the vagueness of the language. What exactly is "rather bad" or "not too late"?
