There is no difference in meaning, but "whilst" is very dated.

There a similar optional but dated "st" in the pair among/amongst . I remember being taught by a priest who insisted that there was nothing in the "Hail Mary"* about "a monk swimming".

*A prayer that traditionally used the words "blessed art thou amongst women".
