    Unhappy Deep vs Surface Structure

I'm confused about how to form each type of structure from 1 sentence. My book only gives one example. Surface: "J.K. Rowling wrote the novel that I recommended." Deep: "J.K. Rowling wrote the novel I recommended the novel." But I have a sentence totally different and don't know what to do. My sentence is "The colored window that my mother painted won first prize." I firgure that is the deep structure? Would the surface then be something like "It won first prize."? or "The colored window won first prize."? Please HELP

According to your example, this would be the deep structure of that sentence:

The colored window won first prize my mother painted the colored window.
