I'm confused about how to form each type of structure from 1 sentence. My book only gives one example. Surface: "J.K. Rowling wrote the novel that I recommended." Deep: "J.K. Rowling wrote the novel I recommended the novel." But I have a sentence totally different and don't know what to do. My sentence is "The colored window that my mother painted won first prize." I firgure that is the deep structure? Would the surface then be something like "It won first prize."? or "The colored window won first prize."? Please HELP![]()

According to your example, this would be the deep structure of that sentence:
The colored window won first prize my mother painted the colored window.
