hello,

the following conditional appears in an article

*As long as the operation is carried out skilfully by an experienced surgeon, keyhole surgery damages the patient far less than a conventional operation.

1) I would like to know What TYPE of conditional is this and why is it used?

This is a zero conditional. It has the present tense in both clauses. It is used to describe habitual actions and accepted facts. It is an accepted fact that keyhole surgery is less damaging if it is performed correctly.

"As long as" has the same meaning as "if."
