Sentence Patterns
Dear Teacher, I need help with the following ‘sentence patterns’ question:
Assume that there are five patterns:
VP1: SUB + V
VP2: SUB + V + COMP
VP3: SUB + V + DOB
VP4: SUB + V + IOB + DOB
VP5: SUB + V + DOB + COMP
Question:
1. I let the system [to] perform the task.
2. I apply the method to the platform.
Both are VP3’s sentences. True?
Many thanks,
David

Re: Sentence Patterns
Hello David
1. I let the system [to] perform the task.
2. I apply the method to the platform.
I would take #2 as a VP3, with "to the platform" as an adverbial prepositional phrase.
For #1, however, I might take "perform the task" as an object complement; but I'm not sure.
(Maybe another member will be prepared to offer a 2nd opinion.)
All the best,
MrP
