. I think the reason some people tack on a (mistaken) self is the uncertainty about when to use subject and object pronouns. If teachers are always saying "me not I" or "him not he, someone who wants to avoid that mistake may slip into another: - out of the frying-pan, into the fire, as we say.

Of course, this explanation wouldn't work for "you", but I think the support of examples like "myself" and "himself" encouraged the mistaken usage more generally.
