Default veb patterns: help

If I paid enough attention in my English language lessons, verb "help" is the one that shouldn't collocate with other verb with "to". Like "let" (Let me do it., e.g.).

Am I right?? Or can it be connected also with an infinitive (with "to", then)?

Yesterday I read the following sentence in the introduction of a book (it's called "Is That What You Mean?") written by an English speaking man.
"Is That What You Mean?" will help you to understand why a mistake is wrong and help you to correct it."

Why is the "to" used here?

It's OK:
Help you understand
Help you to understand

They are both used. I am not sure whether the infinitive is more common in BrE- let's wait to see what the AE speakers say.

In all the cases I can think of, "help" takes either the bare or to infinitive.
I think the bare form is more common in AE.
