Default what is the correct verb tense ?

Dear teacher

In the following sentence are both the Present Simple and Past Simple correct?

They were/ are in the USA for two months to visit their family.

I feel the Simple Present is not right..

Can you say to put out a cigarette?

Thank you so much

You can use the Present Simple if the subject is still in the USA. Personally I'd say:

They are in the USA for two months visiting their family

but the form you have used may also be correct.

And yes, you can put out a cigarette.
