Default Better Land

Hi again. I am still working on "The McWilliamses and the Burglar Alarm" and I got to the following sentece.

Quote:
we were gradually fading toward a better land, on account of the daily loss of sleep; so we finally had the expert up again, and ...
A better land doesn't make any sense to me. Had it been a worse land, I would have understood it. Can you please see any comprehensible meaning to it.

Thank you.

I've usually (in BE) heard [death and going to] Heaven referred to as "[going to] a better place", but I think that's the idea.

So if I understand aright, that would mean,

Quote:
we were dying [tending to our death, or something] because of the daily loss of sleep; so we finally had the expert up again, and ...
Well, it makes more sense. Referring to the other world as the better world, that would make it more understandable.
