Default use of word "perusal"

Is the use of the word "perusal" out-dated today? A friend claims it is an old-fashioned word and should be sparingly used today. Is this view correct?

Default Re: use of word "perusal"

.
It is certainly a more formal word, but I certainly use it on occasion, and have heard nothing of its imminent demise. For some people, demise may also be absent from their vocabulary.
