| The water pollution was not caused by dirty tanks, because all of the fresh-water tanks were cleaned last month. This is not the only way to say this, but I think it is direct and easy to understand. Other teachers may have other suggestions. |

| Thanks, Bob. I get it. One of the most common mistakes I see from the English learners here (on UE.com) is that they are fixated on the idea that there is such a thing as formal English. Many of these learners are native speakers of languages with restrictive forms of address for showing deference and respect. In the English-speaking business world, formality in language is merely the lack of informality. We tend to value clarity of expression over complexity. We show each other respect by not wasting the other's time with false flattery and latinate diction. Of course, academia is a whole 'nuther matter... |
