What is the difference between ancestor and descendant?

To put it simply and quickly:
Your ancestors are your great-grandparents, your grandparents and so on.
Your descendants are your children, your grandchildren and so on.
However, note that these words are mostly used to describe more distant generations.
Examples:
He could trace his ancestors back 300 years
They are descendants of the original English settlers, who colonized this place three centuries ago.
