Default babyno1's question list

guess I will haunt this helpful forum from time to time, so give it a fixed title
Then let's come to business."As previously indicated H.B.Stowe's 'Uncle Tom's Cabin',was a novel which incited and struck a cord with the moral fabric of Americans certainly throughout the North, and indeed many throughout the South as well." Here what does "struck a cord "mean?(severly criticize?)
"By the mid-1850's the spirit of accomodation had all but vanished. Northern interest in Emancipation pushed by abolitions, eroded relations between families North and South."Here "the spirit of accomodation"means a sort of unannounced compromise between the South and North on the issue of slavery?
Thanks for your time, I really appreciate that.

Hi, and welcome. Struck a chord means that it reached the emotions of those people that the story targeted. Just as literally "The music struck a chord with the listeners"
