Other can be used as an adjective or a noun/pronoun.

When used as an adjective, it doesn't take an article unless the noun it mofidies takes an article.

What did you thik of the other car? (the specific car that isn't this one)
One should be kind to other people. (people in general)

When it is used as a noun/pronoun, it takes an article by the same rules.

As we gave up our seats at the bar, others filled them. (general others)
When we left the party, the others remained. (specific others)

The single indefinitie article becomes attached to the base word - another.

thanks mike for the explanation.
but i am still a bit confuse..

so is it correct if i say:

1. desk, chair and other furniture are painted black

2. desk, chair and others are painted black..
because others can't be follow by noun (furniture)..

but will people understand that others in sentence 2 are furniture?

1. Yes. The desk, the chair, and other furniture are painted black.
2. Not really clear unless their is a prior referant.

I just painted all my chairs. The desk chair is black; the others are white.
