A gerund is a verb acting as a noun. It functions as a noun. A past participle is a form of a verb. You can find out more in our glossary.

Gerund:

• Swimming is fun.

Past participle:

• I like to go swimming.

If you have the verb BE + -ing or an -ing form is used as an adjective, then it is the present paticiple. When iit is used as a noun, as Ron says, or after a preposition, it is a gerund.
