Smile Christmas

I recently picked up ON Christmas. As I have been used to using at and had never come across on Christmas before I started checking against several of my dictionaries, without any success as all of them gave at as the correct preposition. Thus my question(s) is/are
when is on used before christmas?
is it US English?
if both are oK, what's the difference?
